The S&P BSE Sensex closed above 40,000 points for the 1st time on May 23, 2019 with the euphoria experienced due to the Narendra Modi led NDA Government coming to power for yet another term. Nifty also surpassed the 12,000 level for the first time in the history.

Indian Stock Market History

The stock markets in India began way back in 1875. The BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) is the most established stock exchange in India.

The history of Indian stock trading begins with 318 persons taking membership in “Native Share and Stock Brokers Association” which we now know as the BSE. In the year 1965, BSE got eternal recognition from the Government of India.

The NSE (National Stock Exchange) comes next to BSE in terms of recognition. BSE and NSE symbolize themselves as synonyms of Indian stock market.

The 30 stock sensitive index (popularly known as Sensex) was first piled up in 1986. The Sensex is compiled based on the performance of the stocks of 30 financially sound companies.

In the year 1990, the BSE crossed the 1000 mark for the 1st time. It crossed 2000, 3000 and 4000 marks in 1992. The sole reason for such tremendous surge in the Indian stock market was the liberal financial policies announced by Dr. Man Mohan Singh (finance minister of India at that time)

Scam in the Indian Stock Market

The uptrend of the market was all of a sudden lost momentum with Harshad Mehta fraud. It came to public knowledge that Mr. Harshad Mehta, also known as the big bull of Indian stock market redirected immense funds from banks through deceitful means.

He played his part with 270 million shares of around 90 odd companies. A large number of small-size investors became victims of the scam and the Sensex fell more than 570 points.

To avoid such scams in future, the Government of India formed SEBI (The Securities and Exchange Board of India) in 1992. SEBI is the constitutional body that regulates and controls the functioning of stock exchanges, investment advisors, portfolio managers’ brokers, sub-brokers etc.

SEBI oblige several rigid measures to protect the interest of investors. Now with the commencement of online trading and day by day settlements the chances for a fraud is almost nil, says top authorities of SEBI.

Sensex started its journey again after as many as eight years and crossed the 5000 mark for the 1st time in the year 1999 and the 6000 mark in 2000. The 7000 mark was crossed in June and the 8000 mark on September 8 in 2005 itself.

Many FII (Foreign Institutional Investors) are investing in Indian stock markets on a very large scale. The liberal economic policies pursued by successive Governments attracted FIIs to a large scale. Sensex touched 9000 on 28 November 2005 and reached the magical figure of 10000 two and half years later on 6 February 2006.

BSE Sensex History

Published since 1st January 1986, Sensex is regarded as the pulse of the domestic stock markets in India. The base value of the Sensex is taken as 100 on 1 April 1979, and its base year as 1978-79.

Factors That Affect the Stock Market

The impulsive actions of the market gave it a tag – a volatile market. The factors that influenced the market in the past were a good monsoon, election results, international events (BREXIT was the latest issue) etc. Good monsoons all the time raise the market sentiments. A good monsoon typically means improved agricultural produce and more spending capacity among rural folk. The result of a cricket match between India and Pakistan (also with the other nation) also affected the movements in Indian stock market.

Listed Companies on the Stock Exchange

India, after the United States, hosts the largest number of listed companies on the stock exchange. There are as many as 7200 companies listed in India (5,500+ companies listed in BSE and 1,696 companies listed on NSE; Just keep in mind that these numbers are flexible and can change overnight).

Once upon a time viewed with cynicism, stock market now appeals to middle-class and lower middle-class Indians also. Many Indians settled across the globe now divert their savings to stocks. This recent phenomenon is the result of opening up of online trading in India and diminished interest rates from banks. The stockbrokers based in India are opening offices in different countries mainly to cater the needs of NRIs (Non-Resident Indians).

Bombay Stock Exchange Listing

January 23, 2017, was the day when BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) come up with IPO (15,427,197 Equity Shares of Rs 2 aggregating up to Rs 1,243.43 Cr) with an issue price of Rs. 805 – Rs. 806 per Equity Share.

2018 is the year which most investors do not aim to remember (although it is essential to keep everything in mind along with key financial ratios if you want to become a successful investor) where they have lost a major part of the gains that they have earned in 2017.

All sorts of things have happened whether it is higher crude oil prices, Indian rupee depreciating against USD; US-China trade war, NBFC crisis, BREXIT issue, etc. which forces the market to come down and offer almost no return throughout the year and obviously making the investor nervous.

But, keeping all these things aside, Indian Stock Markets have recovered sharply (after February 2019) and offered more than 10 percent gain since then. Beyond that both Sensex and Nifty hit fresh record highs and this is something which forces the individuals to look at the Stock Market again.

Whether you’re a newbie or a veteran in the field of stock market and looking to buy stocks but not sure how to pick them, don’t fear. Finblab listed nine key financial ratios and their meaning that assists you to make the best possible choice.

Price to Earnings Ratio (P/E Ratio)

P/E Ratio is one of the most commonly used ratios by investors across the globe when picking stocks. P/E reveals the fact “how much the investors are happy to pay for a rupee of the company’s earning”

Another way of looking at the P/E ratio is the number of years it will take to gain back the initial investment assuming that the company doesn’t grow at all.

For example, say the P/E is 30; it means the share price is 30 times its earnings. So if the company’s EPS remain constant, it will need about 30 years to make up for the purchase price of the share.

P/E Ratio can be further classified into trailing P/E and forward P/E

When an investor calculates the P/E based on the past 12 months of earnings, it is referred to trailing P/E; and when the P/E is calculated on the basis of estimated future earnings it is referred to forward P/E

In short, to use the P/E ratio accurately, take into account the future earnings and growth prospects of the company. If the current P/E is low, as against the strong future prospect then the stocks make an attractive investment option. But if the company is loaded with falling sales and huge losses, stay away from it, despite having low P/E.

Analysts and Investors are of the view that P/E ratios should be used in combination with other key financial ratios for informed decision-making.

P/E Ratio = Market Price of the Share / Earnings per Share

Price to Book Value Ratio (P/BV Ratio)

Apart from P/E, another ratio that is commonly used by the investors is a price-to-book value or P/BV ratio. This ratio shows the worth of each share of a company as per the company’s accounting book.

Book Value, in simple words, is the amount that will remain if the company liquidates its assets and repays all its liabilities.

Stocks priced at less than book value are purchased on the assumption that, in time, their market price will reflect at least their stated book value, i.e., what the company itself has paid for its own assets.

Price to Book Value Ratio can help you judge if the share price is overpriced or underpriced.

P/BV Ratio = Shareholders’ Funds / Total Number of Equity Shares Issued

Reserves

Every year, the company divides its Net Profit into two portions; (1) Plough Back and (2) Dividends

While dividends are handed over to the shareholders, plough back is kept by the company for its future use and generally included in its reserves.

Hence, if you’re looking for a company with good growth/future prospects, check its reserve figures. If a company’s reserves are two times its equity capital, the company can reward its shareholders going forward with bonus shares.

Also, an increase in the company’s reserves will push its share price as well.

Dividend Yield

The Dividend is the portion of the profit that is distributed among shareholders. While dividend yield of a stock is the dividend of a stock as a percentage to the current market price.

Historically it has been observed that companies offering high dividends don’t have much of growth to talk about. Similarly, companies in high growth sector hardly give any dividend.

To become a successful equity investor and create wealth over a long period of time it is advisable to invest for capital appreciation instead of dividends.

Dividend Yield = (Dividend per Share / Market Price of Share) x 100

Debt to Equity Ratio

The debt-equity ratio is the amount of debt that a company raises for each rupee of shareholders fund.

A low debt to equity ratio is usually considered better, while a high debt to equity ratio indicates a higher level of risk.

As an intelligent investor, your job is to pick a company which has a debt to equity ratio below 1.

Earnings per Share (EPS)

Earnings per Share or EPS are one of the most popular investment ratio used by investors globally. It is a key financial measure, which shows the profitability of a company.

To compute EPS which is the Net Profit divided by the number of shares one will have to exclude the non-recurring income and expenses as adjusted for the tax payment.

EPS = (Net Profit – Preference Dividend) / Weighted Average Number of Shares

ROCE: Key Financial Ratios

Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) is the ratio of operating profit to the capital employed.

To put it simply, it serves as a measure of return generated from each unit of capital deployed in the business.

Historically, operating profit is a far better indicator of the profits earned by the company instead of the net profits. Hence this ratio is the better indicator of the general performance of the company and its operational efficiency.

Companies having a higher ROCE are more likely to be wealth creators when compared to businesses with a low ROCE.

ROCE = (Operating Profit / Capital Employed) x 100

ROE: Key Financial Ratios

Return on Equity (ROE) is the ratio of the net profit to the shareholder funds and is a good indicator of the robustness of the business model.

This ratio gives you an idea of the returns generated by investing in the company.

When used Return on Equity along with ROCE, you get an impression of the company’s capability, financial standing, and its ability to generate returns on shareholders’ finances and capital employed.

ROE = (Net Profit / Shareholders Fund) x 100

Price Earnings Growth Ratio (PEG Ratio)

PEG is an extensively used ratio for computing the intrinsic worth of a share. This ratio helps you decide whether the stock is underpriced, totally-priced or overpriced.

In general, a PEG below 0.5 is a lucrative investment opportunity, whereas PEG exceeds 1.5 is a time to sell.

PEG = PE / Expected Growth Rate Of the EPS of A Company

03-7-2018 (Tuesday)

A volatile trading session at the Indian Stock Market!

The Indian Stock Markets opened flat on the second day of the week and remain range bound till the afternoon session. But both the Sensex and Nifty recovered sharply from opening lows in the later part of the day and closed with gains of over 100 points as far as Sensex is concern and the Nifty up by 40 odd points.

Market participant looked cautious throughout the session due to a continuous trade war between the US and China (the US has set July 6 as the deadline to impose tariffs on 34 billion USD worth of goods from China)

For today, the BSE Sensex rallied 114 points to close at 35379 while the Nifty50 gained 42 points to close the level of 10,700

News of the Day: The BSE will delist as many as 222 companies from July 4 as trading in their shares has remained suspended for over 6 months. The move comes at a time when authorities are clamping down on shell companies for being allegedly used as conduits for illicit fund flows.

04-7-2018 (Wednesday)

Strong trading session at the Indian Stock Market!

The Indian Stock Markets continues its upward journey for the second consecutive day on Wednesday despite negative global cues. It was the better than expected macro data that has helped both the Sensex and Nifty closed on a day’s high.

The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 267 points to close at 35,645 and the 50-share NSE Nifty rallied as many as 70 points to close at 10,770

News of the Day: The Union Cabinet today approved the proposal to hike Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all Kharif crops by 1.5 times of the input cost for the 2018-19 season – a move that is expected to boost Indian farmers’ income. The improved MSP is likewise seen as a step towards meeting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to double the farmer’s income by 2022.

Stocks like Chambal Fertiliser, Deepak Fertilisers, Kaveri Seed, Kohinoor Foods, LT Foods, Mangalam Seeds, and RCF gained Between 1% to 10% in the intraday trade due to the government’s decision to hike minimum support price.

05-7-2018 (Thursday)

A rollercoaster trading on the Indian bourses today!

Concerns over a trade clash between the U.S and China coupled with higher crude oil prices and weak rupee against USD have weighed on market sentiment on Thursday’s trade.

Both the Sensex and Nifty traded dull all through and witnessed selling pressure in the later part of the day as investors and traders adopted a note of caution ahead of a trade tariff deadline between the US and China.

06-7-2018 (Friday)

A day of volatility at the Indian Stock Market!

The Indian Stock Markets opened on a high note yet again on Friday but trading remains muted all through the day. In the later part of the day both the Sensex and Nifty erased most of its intraday gains as investors prefer to book profits ahead of Q2 FY18-19 earning starting from next week onwards.

U.S. tariffs worth 34 billion USD of Chinese exports once again took effect on Friday trading, and concerns of reprisal by Beijing somewhat dampened sentiment across the region.

Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis – A Week Gone By

Future Outlook –

Irrespective of a series of bad news the Indian Stock Markets witnessed a positive momentum (marginally though) on the week ended on July 7 2018.

Markets are largely trading in tandem with global peers. But, the Indian Stock Markets is clearly waiting for the trigger to move forward and Q2 FY18-19 is one of them which will start from the early next week that the market participants are eying. The south-west monsoon hits some of the parts of the country last week which is a big relief.

On the technical front the Nifty took support at 10589 which is around the 89 EMA on the daily chart. In the absence of clear trend Finblab advised the investors and traders to remain cautious. For the time-being the Nifty50 has to close above 10,930 levels whiles on the downside 10,600 is a crucial support!

28-5-2018 (Monday)

Strong and positive trading session as far as Indian Stock Market is concern!

Indian Stock Markets started off the week on a strong and positive note, rallying for the 3rd consecutive day – thanks to (1) sharp decline in Brent crude oil prices {as Russia and Saudi Arabia may increase supplies} and (2) recovery in Rupee against US Dollar.

The BSE Sensex today rose 241 points to close at 35,165, while the NSE Nifty gaining 84 points to close at 10,689.

Construction major Larsen and Toubro (LT) today presented its Q4 numbers during market hours!
Overseas order inflow for the company for Q4 was stood at INR 8,678 Ct, while the total inflow of orders for the quarter came in at INR 49,557 Cr. Consolidated order book of the group at the end of FY18 stood at INR 2.6 lakh Cr.

29-5-18 (Tuesday)

A day of profit-booking at the Indian Stock Market!

Indian Stock Markets failed to continue its winning up-tick for the fourth consecutive day and lose more than 200 points (the BSE Sensex) due to profit booking by the institutional investors. Sharp fall in the rupee against USD also spoiled investor’s sentiment.

The BSE Sensex today falling 216 points to close at 34,949, while the NSE Nifty shedding 55 points to close at 10,633.

State-run power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) today announced it Q4 numbers after the market hours.
The Company said the outstanding order book stood at INR 1.18 lakh Cr at the end of March 2018 (highest in last 5 years). The company has booked orders worth INR 40,932 Cr in FY18 up by 74% compared to FY17.

30-5-18 (Wednesday)

A volatile trading session at the Indian Stock Market!

Indian Stock Markets today ended marginally lower after a volatile trading all through the day! The investors and traders’ trade cautiously ahead of the expiry of May futures & options contracts on Thursday.

A couple of news that force the indices to trade volatile are (1) political confusion in Italy (globally investors seems to be worried over Eurozone break-up risk due to political uncertainty in Italy) and (2) Moody’s GDP growth forecast on Indian economy.

In a highly volatile trading session, the BSE Sensex fell more than 200 points during the day but managed to recover losses in the last half an hour of trade and close at 34906 down by 43 points, while the NSE Nifty falling 19 points to close at 10,614.

As mentioned earlier, Credit Rating Agency Moody’s today forecast India’s GDP growth. The rating agency has reduced its India 2018 growth forecast to 7.3% from 7.5% earlier but recalled 2019 GDP growth estimates at 7.5%

31-5-18 (Thursday)

A superb rally at the Indian Stock Market on May expiry!

Heavy short covering in the last half an hour of trade; (1) because Brent crude futures fell 0.50% to $77.10 a barrel (due to unexpected growth in US crude inventories and likely increase in crude output from OPEC and non-OPEC members), and (2) easing of political concerns in Italy help the benchmark indices close hire on Thursday, the expiry day of May F&O contracts.

The BSE Sensex today rose 416 points to close at 35,322 and the NSE Nifty gained 122 points to close at 10,736.

In the May series, the BSE Sensex gained 1.7% and the NSE Nifty rallied 1.1%

01-6-18 (Friday)

Future Outlook –

Amid higher volatility and May F&O expiry, the benchmark indices able to clock handsome gains and close above 35,200 levels as far as Sensex is concern while the Nifty index closed just below 10,700 levels for the weekends on 1st June 2018.

Some of the events that have happened in the later part of the week could impact the Indian Stock Markets in the next week. These are –

Lok Sabha by-poll Results: After being failed to form a government in Karnataka, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a major setback on Thursday after it failed to retain the Bhandara-Gondiya (Maharashtra) and Kairana (UP) Lok Sabha seats. Market expert believes that the state elections which are lined-up may keep Indian Stock Market on the unstable ground till the 2019 general elections.

PMI Growth In May: Activity in India’s manufacturing sector grew at a weaker pace in the month of May as compared to previous month. Slower expansion in output and domestic demand helped push the Nikkei Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index, down to 51.2 in May from April’s 51.6.

On the technical front, as predicted in the previous article of Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis the Nifty index is stuck in a range of 10,777 on the higher side and 10,550 on the downside.

With Q4 earning seasons is in its last legs, the market will now closely watch how the monsoon season progress as it already hit Kerala just a few days back. Looking at the current scenario, Finblab believes that the market may witness consolidation and the stock specific action is likely to be there going forward.

Again Nifty may trade 10,550 to 10,850 zone in near term.

A Downward journey for both the index for the first couple of days (backed by Karnataka government formation, crude oil price movement, quarterly results, and certain geopolitical news) and then a smart recovery in the last two trading session!

The BSE Sensex gained only 77 points whiles the NSE Nifty up just 9 points on a weekly basis as compared to previous week. Here is an Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis (21 May 2018 to 25 May 2018) by Finblab.

21-05-2018

Weak trading session and a poor opening of the new week as far as Indian Stock Market is concern!

The Indian Stock Markets today open on a weak note due to the political drama played at Karnataka last Saturday (when BS Yeddyurappa of BJP failed to prove the majority and resigned immediately and Congress with the help of JDS will form the government). Weaker rupee and higher crude oil prices also spoiled the mood of the market.

The BSE Sensex today was down by 232 points and closed at 34,616 while the NSE Nifty cracking 80 points to close at 10,517.

IndoStar Capital Finance Limited – Mumbai based leading non-banking finance company (NBFC) which recently came up with an IPO of INR 1140 Cr got listed on the market today. The Company saw decent gains in the first couple of hours of trade despite weak market sentiments, finally closing up 2.3% at INR 585.

22-05-2018

Range-bound trading session at the Indian Stock Market!

After shedding more than 900 points on the Sensex and 290 points on the Nifty index in last 5 trading session, bulls finally managed to get charge at Dalal Street on Tuesday’s session as benchmark indices ended in the green for the first time in last five sessions – thanks to the smart recovery in the most beaten down stocks.

The BSE Sensex was up by 35 points to close at 34,651 whiles the NSE Nifty gained 20 points to close at 10,537 amid high volatility.

The Country’s largest bank State Bank of India (SBI) today announced its number after the market hours. The Bank reported a net loss of INR 7,718 Cr for the March quarter while the provisions surged to INR 28,096 Cr, up from INR 11,740 Cr in the corresponding quarter last year. The bank’s non-performing assets (NPAs) to its total loans deteriorated to 10.91% as on March 31, 2018, from 10.35% as on December 31, 2017, and 9.1% at the end of March last year.

23-05-2018

Selling pressure was seen on the Indian Stock Market today!

The Wednesday’s trading session began on a flat note and traded range bound all through the day. However, a heavy selloff in the last half an hour of trade brought more weakness in the equity markets.

The Sensex today closed lower by 306 points at 34345, while the Nifty was down by 106 points and closed at 10430.

Tata Motors, India’s largest automotive player by revenue, declared its Q4 result post market hours today.

The Company registered a 50% year-on-year (YOY) fall in its consolidated net profit for the March quarter to INR 2,176.16 Cr. Revenue from operations of the company grew by 16% to INR 91,279.09 Cr in the quarter under review.

Guenter Butschek, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tata Motors looks optimistic about the company and during the press conference he said – FY18 has been a hallmark year for Tata Motors with (1) record-breaking sales performance, (2) increase in market share, and (3) the standalone business turning profitable before one-time exceptional charges.

24-05-2018

Strong trading session amid high volatility at the Indian Stock Market!

After closing flat to negative on the Wednesday’s trade, the Indian Stock Market today opened on a strong note – thanks to the positive global cues and marginally lower crude oil prices (oil prices fell today on expectations that OPEC will increase the production following concerns over supply from Venezuela and Iran)

The BSE Sensex today closed 318 points higher at 34,663 while the Nifty50 rose 83 points to close at 10,513.

The price of Jet Airways today fell more than 8% on the early trade to hit its 52-week new low of INR 386.05 on the BSE after the company reported a standalone net loss of INR 1,036 Cr in the quarter four due to the upswing in (1) oil prices and (2) a weaker rupee.

25-05-2018

Solid trading session at the Dalal Street!

The Indian Stock Markets today soared for the second straight day again for that old factor, (1) sharp fall in crude oil prices, and (2) upside in the Indian rupee against the US dollar. Positive European market cues also augmented the rally.

The 30-share Sensex today was up by 262 points and closed at 34,925 and the 50-share NSE Nifty gained 91 points to close at 10,605.

Future Outlook –

Indian Stock Markets ended on a flat note last week! Nifty ended the week on a flat note, up 0.08%, while the Sensex up 0.22%. With the earning seasons come to an end the major events that the Markets will be eying at this moment expiry which will happen in the next week.

On the technical front, as predicted in the last Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis that Nifty may find support around 10450 to 10490 levels and it did exactly the same and kissed the low of 10418 and bounced back smartly from those levels.

Next week is the week of expiry. Finblab believes that both the Sensex and Nifty may face volatility/consolidation during the week in the absence of a positive trigger. On the upper side, Nifty Index may find resistance around 10750 to 10800 levels while on the lower side it may find support near 10500.

Nifty has formed a bullish Dragon-Fly Doji pattern on the weekly chart, indicating a positive bias for the index. 10270 levels will act as a strong support as far as Nifty is concern!

Poor week as far as Indian Stock Market is concern!

Only two factors that twizzle the Indian Stock Markets all through the week are (1) the higher Crude Oil price and (2) question mark over the Government formation in the state of Karnataka.

The BSE Sensex lost 688 points whiles the NSE Nifty lost 210 points on a weekly basis as compared to previous week. Here is an Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis (14 May 2018 to 18 May 2018) by Finblab.

14-MAY-2018

Range-bound trading session at the Indian Stock Market ahead of Karnataka election outcomes!

After closing firm on the last trading session (290 points up on the Sensex and 90 points up on the Nifty on 11 May) the Indian Stock Markets today, as expected, remained range-bound all through the day and ended on a flat note as caution prevailed ahead of Karnataka election results due tomorrow.

The major reason that triggers the markets to remain range bound till the last minute of the session was the Exit Polls results which anticipated hung assembly in Karnataka.

The 30-share BSE Sensex today gained 21 points to close at 35,557 and the 50-share NSE Nifty rose 0.10 points to close at 10,807.

Hindustan Unilever (HUL), India’s biggest consumer goods company, has presented it Q4 numbers on Monday after market hours. The company reported a 14.2% year-on-year rise in net profit to INR 1,351 Cr for the quarter ended March 2018 due to higher sales in its home care business. Revenue from operations for the quarter came in at INR 9,097 Cr compared with INR 8,906 Cr in the same quarter last year.

15-MAY-2018

A day of high volatility at the Indian Stock Market!

Opening firm in the morning session (up by more than 300 points) backed by the early polls showing BJP’s clear majority in the Karnataka election, the market couldn’t sustained gain and fell severely from its day’s high in the late half of the day and ended flat amidst uncertainty over formation of the government in Karnataka after election results.

BJP in the Karnataka election has emerged as the single largest party after winning 104 seats (but was away from the clear majority) while Congress wins 78 seats and JD(S) wins 38 seats at the end of the day.

Markets, in a situation like this, will be clearly in a wait and watch mood and see who will and how to form the Government in the state of Karnataka.

The BSE Sensex today slipped 437 points from day’s high to end 13 points down at 35,544 while the NSE Nifty down 5 points to close at 10,802.

Shares of Punjab National Bank (PNB) ended 12% lower at INR 75.55 from the previous close on the back of a weak set of numbers for the quarter ended March 2018. The company has reported a net loss of INR 13,416.91 Cr while the profit was dragged by 3 folds due to a surge in provisions towards bad loans. The banks total net worth fell below the amount of non-performing loans.

D-Mart today rallied 4% as the stock will now be the part of MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) India Index with effect from June 1.

16-MAY-2018

A volatile session at the Indian Stock Market today!

The Markets today opened on a week note today backed by a couple of bad news from the overseas front (like, North Korea refuses to join US summit and the Crude oil prices which touched at 3 and half years highs, 79 USD a barrel) and domestic news (like, uncertainty over Karnataka state that who will form the Government and PNB and RCom issue)

The markets today witness a heavy loss in the early trade, but recovered half of its losses at the end of closing. The BSE Sensex today was down by 156 points and closed at 35,388 while the NSE Nifty fell 61 points to close at 10,741.

Cigarette-to-soap maker ITC today announced its Q4 results today.

17-MAY-2018

Weak trading session at the Indian Stock Market!

The Indian Stock Markets extended losses for the 3rd consecutive day on Thursday backed by the higher Crude oil prices (trading 80 USD a barrel now) and the tricky situation at Karnataka that who will form the Government.

The macro data can be badly affected by the higher crude oil prices going forward and the markets seem to be worried more about that at this moment.

The BSE Sensex was down 239 points to close at 35,149 while the NSE Nifty closed below the 10,700 levels, down 58 points at 10,683.

Bajaj Finance – a leading NBFC announced its Q4 numbers today.
The Indian Stock Markets witnessed heavy selling pressure yet again for the fourth consecutive day on the back of continued uncertainty over the formation of government in the state of Karnataka.

The 30-share BSE Sensex today falling 301 points and closed at 34,848 while the 50-share NSE Nifty down 86 points to close at 10,596.

Future Outlook –

The Indian Stock Markets faced huge selling pressure all through the week (except that of Monday’s trading session) due to the political drama played at the state of Karnataka after election result was out.

Though Saturday is crucial as far as Karnataka is concern, going forward markets will focus more on the corporate results that will announce early next week and the progress of monsoon in later part of the month. The movement of INR v/s USD and the crude oil prices will be closely monitored in the coming sessions as well.

On the technical front, the Nifty index likely to go down further and may find support near 10450 to 10490 levels which is its 89 DEMA.

Finblab is of the view that the Indian Markets will consolidate in the near term, 10450-10490 on the lower side and 10800-10850 on the upper side, due to lack of fresh positive news globally as well as on the domestic front, however, if the on-going correction last long it should be considered as a good opportunity for the long-term investors to buy good and fundamentally solid stocks on dips.

Super-Duper hit week as far as Indian Stock Market is concern!

Without fearing of higher crude oil prices, ignoring US stance on Iran and various other news factors, the Indian Stock Market continues to surge higher purely led by domestic news.

The BSE Sensex gained 621 points whiles the NSE Nifty gained 188 points on a weekly basis as compared to previous week. Here is an Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis (07 May 2018 to 11 May 2018) by Finblab.

07-MAY-2018

Superb trading session as far as Indian Stock Market is concern!

After having a couple of bad trading sessions (Thursday and Friday) of last week, the market began its journey on Monday on a positive note, with the Sensex opening more than 100 points higher, while the Nifty managed to trade around 10,650-mark.

After trading around those levels for the major part of the day, the markets witnessed further buying in the afternoon session thanks to the positive global cues especially from the US unemployment numbers which comes at 18 years low. The US Fed decision not to hike interest rates also added the fuel.

Today, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced a surprise buyback of bonds worth INR 10,000 Cr which has helped both the NBFC and PSU banks stocks to post solid gains.

The BSE Sensex was up 293 points to close at 35208, while the NSE Nifty was up 97 points and closed at 10716.

08-APR-2018

The Indian Stock Markets ended flat on Tuesday’s trading session!

After closing firm (above 35,200 levels) on Monday, the Indian Stock Market on Tuesday ended on a flat note, with the nifty again managing to hold 10,700 levels.

Again today, the BSE index gained more than 100 points in the first hour of trade, while the Nifty gained momentum to over 10,750 levels. But in the absence of major news the bulls were not able to get the momentum and both indices turned red in the afternoon trade before thanks to some recovery in the last half an hour of trade helped the indices ended flat.

The BSE Sensex ended up 8 points at 35216, while the NSE Nifty closed higher by 2 points at 10718.

Jubilant Foodworks today announced its Q4 numbers after the market hours where the company posted a net profit of INR 68.1 Cr against INR 6.7 Cr posted during the quarter of last year. The firm posted stellar growth of 27% in its revenues to INR 780 Cr against INR 612.8 Cr YOY. The company’s Board today approved a bonus issue in the ratio of 1:1

09-APR-2018

Solid trading session at the Indian Stock Market!

After closing flat on a Tuesday’s session, the Indian Stock Markets began on an absolutely flat note today as well and it actually managed to trade in the red for a brief period. But a smart recovery in the heavyweights like TCS and RIL pushed up indices in the last couple of hours of trade.

The Sensex is up 103 points to close at 35319, while the Nifty was up 24 points to close at 10742.

10-APR-2018

Weak trading session at the Indian Stock Market!

After steady gains on Wednesday, the Thursday began on a positive note as the Sensex opened 100 points higher, while the Nifty too traded above 10,750 levels. But again the heavy selling pressure among banks, metals and pharma stocks pulled the indices through the afternoon.

At the close of market, the Sensex was down 73 points at 35246, while the Nifty ended lower by 25 points at 10717.

Asian Paints today announced its Q4 numbers after the market hours. For the entire fiscal 2017-18, the company’s consolidated net profit stood at INR 2,097.52 Cr as against INR 2,016.25 Cr in 2016-17. Total income of the company was INR 17,482.52 Cr for the fiscal under review, compared to INR 17,118.98 Cr in 2016-17.

11-APR-2018

Fantastic trading session as far as Friday is concern!

Markets continue to rally on Friday thanks to the positive global cues. A sharp rally in the financials, metals, and FMCG stocks, especially in the last hour of trade, ensured that the market managed to close the week with very good gains.

At the close of market hours, the Sensex was up 290 points to close at 35536, while the Nifty was up 90 points at 10807.

Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis – A Week Gone By

Future Outlook –

The Indian Stock Markets witnessed a handsome gain on the week ended on 11 May 2018 where the Sensex was up by more than 600 points and the Nifty was up by more than 180 points backed by corporate earnings or anything else.

Going forward it is likely that the Indian Stock Markets could witness heavy volatility as it is the time for Karnataka election and it may be a big test for the BJP ahead of 2019 General Election and later on its outcome. But looking at the current trend it feels like that the ruling party at the centre will have upper hand when the result announce. Let’s wait till then.

On the technical front, the Nifty may find some resistance near 10,785 and 10,815 levels and on the lower side it can find support somewhere around 10,450 to 10,500 levels.

Higher crude oil is a reason to worry as far as India is concern and it could create some problems going forward.

Highly volatile week (in a narrow range though) as far as Indian Stock Markets are concern!

In the absence of major news (except that of corporate earnings) the Indian Stock Markets traded in the narrow range throughout the week, with the 10,500 to 10,700 range on the Nifty and 34,600 to 35,300 on the Sensex.

There was some positive news like the announcements from the Reserve Bank of India on borrowing norms and minor correction in crude oil prices but that fails to help markets post extraordinary gains.

The BSE Sensex lost 59 points whiles the NSE Nifty lost 73 points on a weekly basis as compared to previous week. Here is an Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis (30 Apr 2018 to 04 May 2018) by Finblab.

30-APR-2018

Good and solid opening for the Indian Stock Market as far as Monday’s trading session is concern!

All sorts of news, like (1) correction in the crude oil prices, (2) easing up the norms for extra commercial borrowing by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), (3) better Q4 corporate earning numbers – especially from HDFC, and (4) positive global cues boosted the mood of the markets.

The BSE Sensex rallied 191 points to close at 35,160 while the NSE Nifty ended above 10,700 levels rising 47 points to close at 10,739.

Market heavyweights Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) today presented its Q4 numbers today, after market hours. The Company reported a 39% jump in Net Profit to INR 2,846 Cr for the 4th quarter ending March 2018, while the Net Interest Income (NII) grows 4% to INR 3,249 Cr. The company’s total loan book stood at INR 359,442 Cr, up by 21% over last year.

01-MAY-2018

The Indian equity markets remain closed today because of Maharashtra Day.

02-MAY-2018

Range bound session at the Indian Stock Market!

Benchmark indices ended the range bound session on a flat note Wednesday ahead of Federal Reserve’s policy meeting.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 16 points at 35,176 while the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 21 points to 10,718.

03-MAY-2018

Volatile trading session as far as Thursday’s is concern!

Both the Sensex and Nifty ended in red following global weakness amid US-China trade talks. Most global markets today lower in the trade as investors digested Federal Reserve’s views on inflation and the focus again shifted to US-China trade talks.

The BSE Sensex ended 73 points lower at 35,103 whiles the NSE Nifty closed below 10,700 levels, down 38 points at 10,680.

04-MAY-2018

Again a volatile trading session at the Indian Stock Market!

Trading in a narrow for a major part of the day, some selling in the last hour of trade helps the market closes in red. The market today closed lower for the 2nd consecutive day on Friday amid weak Asian cues and profit booking.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 188 points at 34,915 and the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 61 points to 10,618.

It was a historic day for the Indian Stock Market, as the market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) today, after market hours, announced that stock exchanges will now be able to trade in Equity Derivatives Segment between 9 AM and 11:55 PM. The step was taken with a view to enabling integration of trading of various segments of securities market at the level of exchanges.

Indian Stock Market Weekly Analysis – A Week Gone By

Future Outlook –

The Indian Stock Markets ended on a flat note the week ended on 4th April 2018. Corporate earning so far has helped both the Sensex and Nifty to close above that psychological level of 35,000 and 10,700 respectively. But, it is fair to conclude that the investors are definitely in a wait and watch mood ahead of Karnataka election and its outcome.

The crude oil prices surges as many as 2% on Friday (highest since November 2014) as global supplies remained tight and the market awaited news from Washington on possible new U.S. sanctions against Iran. And, the higher P/E ratio could put pressure on the markets.

On a technical front, the Nifty 50 which started on a strong note for the first couple of trading session failed to hold on to momentum and quickly trimmed gains on Thursday and Friday and closed just above the crucial support level of 10,600.

The Technical chart indicates if the Nifty Index convincingly closes above 10,700 levels and stays there for two to three sessions could put bulls back in charge of markets, and close below 10,600 levels could fuel selling pressure.

Market regulator SEBI in a landmark decision on May 4, 2018, announced, after market hours, that stock exchanges will now be able to trade in the Equity Derivatives Segment between 9 AM and 11.55 PM (from 1 of October 2018 though) is a good move. It is interesting to see, how markets will react to this on Monday’s trading session.

Fantastic week as far as Indian Stock Market is concern!

Ignoring the fact of higher crude oil prices (> 75 USD a barrel), highest bond yield in the US markets (3%) after 2014, various other global news flows and a better Q4 corporate earnings has helped both the Sensex and Nifty to reach towards the levels of 35,000 and 10,700 respectively on a week ended on 27th April 2018.

The BSE Sensex gained 554 points or 1.61% whiles the NSE Nifty gains 129 points or 1.21% on a weekly basis as compared to previous week. Here are the details on Indian Stock Market Weekly Review (23 Apr 2018 to 27 Apr 2018) by Finblab.

27-APR-2018

Future Outlook –

It is fair enough to conclude that the bulls have a strong grip on the Indian Stock Markets in anticipation of better corporate earnings and a normal monsoon this year.

Global Credit Rating Agency Fitch today (27 April 2018) affirmed India’s sovereign rating at BBB- with a STABLE outlook, saying that the country’s medium-term growth potential is strong.

Going forward market will closely watch the Q4 numbers as well as the Karnataka Elections and its outcome.

On technical parameters, the Nifty index may face a resistance near 10,700 levels since it has made a run-up of more than 7% from the low of 9,952 but if it manages to cross that 10,700 level decisively than it may go to the levels of 11,000.

Positive Factors

Better Corporate Earnings

Normal Monsoon Forecast

Stable GTS Collection Data

Negative Factors

Higher Crude Oil Prices (75 USD)

Higher US Bond Yield (3%)

Nifty P/E Ratio (> 26%)

After having a wonderful rally in the last week ended on 13th April 2018 (where the Sensex gained more than 550 points and the Nifty up by more than 150 points) the Indian Stock Markets witness a phase of consolidation all through 5 trading session (16 to 20 April) ahead of Q4 earnings.

The Markets though enjoy a sense of positivity for the first couple of days of the week backed by Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) classification on having a normal monsoon this year and lower WPI Inflation rate. But in the later part of the week, the Markets face setbacks by news of cash crunch in some part of the country and week global cues.

The BSE Sensex gained 224 points or 0.65% on a weekly basis while The NSE Nifty gains 83 points or 0.79% as compared to previous week. Here are the details on Indian Stock Market Weekly Review (16 Apr 2018 to 20 Apr 2018) by Finblab.

16-APR-2018

After a wonderful finish in the last week, the Indian Stock Markets open on caution note today amid geopolitical tensions on the back of US-led airstrikes on Syria, higher crude oil prices, and sluggish global cues.

The Markets remain range bound till afternoon but the recovery in the last hour of trade backed by hopes of normal monsoon expected in the current year (the south-west monsoon is likely to be 97% of the long period average (LPA) according to the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) classification, lower inflation rate, and favourable earnings season boosted sentiment. Both the news has helped the market close higher for the 8th consecutive session on Monday.

The BSE Sensex once lost 406 points in intraday trade but recovers smartly and ends 113 higher at 34,305 while the NSE Nifty rose 48 points and closed at 10,528.

17-APR-2018

It was a range bound trading session all through the day as far as Indian Stock Markets are concern! Normal monsoon forecast by IMD for June-September period and positive global cues boosted the market sentiment. Investors are absolutely in wait and watch mood before the corporate earnings from some big names like TCS and others.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 90 points at 34,395 while the 50-share NSE Nifty rose 20 points to 10,549. It was the 9th consecutive day where Bulls have upper hand at the Indian Stock Market.

18-APR-2018

The market finally broke its 9 days upward journey in Wednesday’s trade. Though opened on a positive note, the markets fell in the afternoon session backed by mixed corporate earnings, higher crude oil prices, and cash crunch (shortage of cash in ATM in some parts of India).

The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 63 points and closed at 34,332 while the Nifty fell 23 points to 10,526 amid consolidation.

19-APR-2018

After shedding 60 odd points on the Sensex on Wednesday’s trade, the Indian Stock Markets once again witness a positive bounce back on Thursday’s trading session even as crude oil prices hit multi-year highs. Positive cues from the global markets and rally in the metal stocks on London Metal Exchange also helped the indices posted marginal gains.

The BSE Sensex closed up by 96 points at 34,427 while the NSE Nifty rose 39 points to close at 10,565.

India’s largest IT services provider TCS today presented its Q4 numbers today after markets hours. The Company beat analyst expectations on all fronts. The operating profit margin of the Company was in line expectation.

Consolidated profit of the company grew by 5.7% to INR 6,904 Cr while revenue increased by 3.8% to INR 32,075 Cr for the quarter ended March 2018. The Company today also announced BONUS Shares in the ratio of 1:1.

20-APR-2018

It was a volatile trading session as far as Indian Stock Markets are concern, in a narrow range though. The markets lost more than 100 points on the Sensex but it was the IT stocks that have helped the markets to erase all lose before closing flat to marginally negative.

The Sensex lost just 12 points to close at 34416 while the Nifty lost 1 point and close at 10564.

Indian Stock Market Weekly Review – A Week Gone By

Future Outlook –

Domestic news flows whether it is Indian Meteorological Department forecast on monsoon, March Inflation numbers and good set of Q4 results from the country’s biggest IT firm TCS (1:1 bonus of course) has helped the Sensex gains more than 200 points and Nifty to post more than 80 points gain on a weekly basis.

Going forward it is likely that the corporate earnings are the key and will be the driving force as far as Indian Stock Markets are concern.

On technical parameters, the Nifty index formed a Doji kind of pattern for the second consecutive trading session in a row. Besides that, the way crude prices are increasing it is an alarming situation as far as Indian Stock Markets are concern.

Since the Nifty Index formed a Neutral pattern on a daily chart investor are advised to tread with caution and wait for a decisive move before taking fresh trades.
