The Company was initially incorporated as Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited, a private limited company under the Companies Act, 1956, on November 1, 1975.
On May 9, 2025, the shareholders passed a special resolution converting the company into a public limited company.
A fresh certificate of incorporation was issued by the Registrar of Companies on May 20, 2025.

Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI) is a premier consultant in open-pit and underground mine planning and design in coal, lignite, and other minerals.
In India, it has a 61 percent market share in the coal and mineral consulting industry.
Key business verticals of the company include –
- Geological Exploration and Resource Evaluation,
- Mine Planning and Design Services,
- Environmental Planning and Monitoring Services,
- Geomatics, Remote Sensing, and Survey Services.

As of December 31, 2025, CMPDI operates seven regional institutes located in key coal-producing states in the country, including Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal.
Laboratories Network
As of December 31, 2025, the company ran a network of eight state-of-the-art laboratories spread over different coalfields in the country.
These laboratories are staffed by a dedicated team with technical experience in coal testing.
